Why do you need a business blueprint?

When I hear the word 'blueprint' I think of detailed plans for building a new house or remodeling an old one. I also think of carpentry or woodworking projects, or the means to creating invention prototypes that take a product from being 'just an idea' and place it firmly into reality.
